Blepharoplasty

Plastic Surgery Services: Exclusively at Washington locations with Dr. Ozerdem.

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic or functional surgical procedure to improve the appearance or function of the eyelids. It involves removing or repositioning excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids.

Types of Blepharoplasty:

1. Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty:

  • Typically addresses drooping upper eyelids that may impair vision or create a tired appearance.
  • Often performed for functional reasons, such as improving peripheral vision obstructed by sagging skin.

2. Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty:

  • Focuses on reducing puffiness, bags, or wrinkles under the eyes.
  • Typically a cosmetic procedure to create a more youthful and rested look.

Benefits:

  • Improves vision (if sagging eyelids obstruct sight).
  • Enhances the aesthetic appearance of the eyes.
  • Reduces signs of aging, such as wrinkles and droopy skin.

Procedure Overview:

  • Performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
  • Incisions are made along natural creases or inside the eyelid to minimize visible scarring.
  • Excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle are removed or repositioned.
  • Incisions are closed with sutures, adhesives, or surgical tape.

Recovery:

  • Mild swelling and bruising are common and typically resolve within 1–2 weeks.
  • Most patients return to normal activities in about 7–10 days.
  • Full results become visible as swelling subsides over several weeks.
